Dental EmergencyIf you’ve had a tooth knocked out, it can be a scary experience. But you’re not alone. An estimated five million children and adults have a permanent tooth knocked out each year. Whether you lost the tooth from playing sports or from some other type of accident, a visit to your Leander emergency dentists is in order right away.

Don’t Panic! It Can Be Saved!

Some people falsely assume that once a tooth is knocked out that it is permanently gone. But an emergency visit to your dentist could save the tooth so you can use it for years to come. In order to save the tooth, you’ll need to take the proper steps and see your Leander emergency dentists as soon as possible.

Step 1: Find the tooth. When you locate the tooth, pick it up by the crown part, not by the root. Be sure to handle the tooth gently to avoid any breakage.

Step 2: If the tooth is dirty, be sure to gently clean the debris off the tooth. Do not use any type of soap or cleaning chemicals on the tooth. Simply rinse it in water. Do not scrub the tooth or rub too vigorously. Avoid drying the tooth and do not store it in a tissue.

Step 3: Try to reinsert the tooth. If you can get the tooth back in the socket, do so. The sooner you can have the tooth back in the socket the greater the chance that the tooth will survive the ordeal. Hold the tooth in place by gently biting down.

Step 4: Keep the tooth moist. If you cannot get the tooth reinserted in your mouth, place the tooth in a cup of milk, inside your cheek, or in an emergency solution called Save-a-Tooth® which is available at your local pharmacy. Try not to use water.

Step 5: See your Leander emergency dentists as quickly as possible, generally within 30 minutes or less. In some cases, your tooth may be saved even if it has been more than an hour since it was knocked out. But the sooner you see your dentist, the greater your chances of keeping your natural tooth.

If you need an emergency dentist, contact the friendly dentists and staff at Crystal Falls Family and Cosmetic Dentistry in Leander, TX by calling (512) 260-7400. Help for a knocked out tooth is just a phone call away.
